Summary of Event

A significant monsoon burst occurred at the start of February, setting daily rainfall records across the Territory on 5 February 2017, as rainfall exceeded 200 mm at Darwin Airport, Nightcliff Pool, Leanyer and Shoal Bay. The monsoonal trough moved across the Territory throughout the week, where the continued heavy rainfall led to flood watches being issued for Northern Coastal Rivers across the Daly and Carpentaria districts, specifically the Adelaide and Daly Rivers, including Katherine River which peaked at 15 metres, whereas Bullo River recorded its highest February total rainfall for 20 years. By 13 February 2017 Darwin had surpassed the wet season average for the whole of the wet season, as this monsoonal trough contributed to the third wettest wet season in the Territory’s history.

Summary of Significant Relief and Recovery Achievements to Date

Continued heavy rainfall prevented floodwaters from receding until April as the Territory experienced its second-wettest wet season on record. Consequently, assessments of damage to the road network were not completed until May, which then enabled activation of this event under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

Emergency relief and recovery works to roads are almost complete, and restoration and replacement of damaged road infrastructure has commenced. The majority of repair works are due for completion in the 2017-18 financial year, in conjunction with the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics repairs and maintenance program.
